You’ve probably heard about Medicare Advantage plans if you’re over the age of 65 or approaching that age. You may have even been so lucky to hear about these types of plans from ex-NFL stars and celebrities if you turn on your TV at the right time.
So what's all the buzz about and why? Today we're breaking down-what are the advantages to Medicare Advantage? 🤨
A Medicare Advantage plan is a type of health plan offered by private insurance carriers (think UPMC, Highmark, Aetna, and Geisinger just to name a few). They provide Original Medicare benefits + additional benefits/coverage. They include your Part A (hospital coverage), Part B (medical coverage) and Part D coverage (prescription drug coverage) in one neat bundle with one carrier, one plan, and one premium.
This can be an advantage from an organization or convenience factor. If I am a Medicare Advantage plan member I know my coverage is through one carrier, with one plan, and one monthly premium No worrying about a separate standalone prescription drug plan or dental/vision/hearing plan.
A Medicare Advantage plan typically is a lower monthly premium compared to a Medicare Supplement. The average Medicare Advantage plan premium in Pennsylvania in 2020 was $34.00.
From a fixed monthly premium standpoint the average Medicare Advantage plan provides lower fixed costs typically. There are Medicare Advantage plans that start at a $0.00/monthly premium and offer benefits such as; $0.00 for a visit to your primary care physician and $0.00 deductible on health and prescription drug benefits.
